How do the privacy legislation changes affect my use of information technology? Do I need to plan to change any of it?
A Privacy Amendment Act has been introduced and became effective from December 2001. This amendment regulates the way that
organisations collect, use, keep secure and disclose personal information.
The amendment requires an organisation to take reasonable steps to protect the personal information it holds. It may be necessary
for an organisation to upgrade its technology or security processes to support this reasonable protection. One example is the employment
of adequate encryption technology and/or other computer software when gathering personal information.
The first step in taking reasonable steps is to assess the existing technical environment to determine how well it supports the
privacy of personal information.
